Figuring Out Art

Art does not have to tell a story --- instead it can evoke feelings,
impressions and ideas that may be difficult to express in words.

Like athletes who train to make difficult moves, it takes
artists years of experience to create artwork that looks effortless.

Artist challenge us to think about how art is defined.
If you see something you don't like, it may not fit your
definition of what art should be.

Art can be interpreted in different ways! Often artists
suggest many possibilities; there is no one right answer.

Your ideas about a work of art may be very different from
someone else's. This is because you bring your own personal
experiences and feelings to the work of art.

What is a Traub Memorial Scholarship?

Bloomfield Hills Schools

Traub Scholarship

Traub Memorial Scholarship Travel Fund began in 1956.  The purpose of the Scholarship is to enable students of good character, who show special proficiency or promise of achievement in the realm of art or music, to enjoy a summer of travel abroad after graduation from high school and before entrance into a college or university.  The donor particularly desires to contribute to the general cultural enrichment of the recipients and not primarily to advancement of their technical education in art or music.

The initial fund was created by a gift with the Fund to continue in perpetuity.  Each year, all the income realized from the trust fund is distributed equally among the winners.  In 1957, the first year of Traub competition, the fund provided two scholarships of $700.  Since 1999, four $1100 scholarships have been awarded, two at Lahser and two at Andover.  At each school one scholarship is awarded in art and one in music.  The Traub competition is open to any high school senior attending either Andover or Lahser.
