"To have another language
is to have a second soul."

(Charlemagne)

The World Languages Department offers all Lahser students the challenge and the excitement of seeing the world through new eyes. By studying another language and culture, students engage in an especially rewarding preparation for their future as citizens in the world community.

About 75% of Lahser students are enrolled in one or more of the seven modern and classical language sequences offered in the World Languages Department. English Language Learners are also served through ESL (English as a Second Language) courses.

In all of these classes students acquire knowledge and develop the skills listed in the National Standards for Foreign Language Education: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparison and Communities.

Skill development occurs in the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. But learning a language involves much more than linguistic skills. Foreign language learning contributes to the overall intellectual, social, creative and aesthetic development of our students by introducing them to the ways in which other groups of people view the world and function in it, and by learning how they express themselves. With extended study, practice and experience, our students learn how to communicate with people who live in other cultures throughout the world.
