The Socratic Seminar is a forum for genuine discussion for
local and international issues

Socratic Seminar Bulletin Board -- updated 3/4/2008
Come join us for our next meeting!

The Socratic Seminar is a forum for genuine discussion of local and international issues, which includes popular culture, literature, history, morals, ethics with relevancy to student and school related topics. The true purpose for Socratic Seminar is for intellectual enlightenment.  All members will be expected to research and participate in discussion topics.  The topics for discussion will be approved by the facilitator (Mr. McLeod), though specific articles, research and opinions will be generated by the members.

Role of the Members
To bring researched ideas to the discussion, donate ideas and questions to the discussion (more than, “I concur”). Additionally, maintain respect and purpose while discussing.  This includes refraining from side conversations and remarks that take away from the meaningful discussion.

Physical Format
Members sit in a circle so that every person can see each other, make eye contact, and practice good discussion skills.  The facilitator sits with the other members to reinforce the notion that it is the members’ ideas and responsibility to maintain meaningful discussion.

Benefits
Since every member is equal, all have the chance to be heard, and to hear others.  There is no judging of members, only the logic and reasoning of ideas.  Members develop communication skills such as articulation, questioning, leading discussion, and listening for insights.  Members also develop respect for fellow members.  The Socratic Seminar requires higher level thinking (critical, evaluative, and synthesis).

Some ideas taken from “Authentic Educator” Authentic Discussion Formats (2004).
