HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELING

At the high school level, counselors assist students in becoming more independent and responsible decision makers. There is continued emphasis on self-awareness, academic progress, and future planning.

COUNSELING DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT

The counseling mission of Bloomfield Hills Schools is to provide meaningful, comprehensive guidance and counseling services to our students. As an integral part of the school community, these services are intended to help students gain self-awareness, become independent, and be capable of making decisions that are both personally satisfying and socially responsible.

FOUR COMPONENTS of a COMPREHENSIVE GUIDANCE & COUNSELING PROGRAM

The guidance curriculum consists of structure developmental experiences presented systematically through classroom and group activities, grades 9-12. The purpose of the guidance curriculum is to provide all students with knowledge of normal growth and development, to promote their positive mental health and to assist them in acquiring and using life skills.

The guidance curriculum includes three major areas:
-Career Planning & Exploration
-Knowledge of Self & Others
-Educational & Career/Technical Development

RESPONSIVE SERVICES ADDRESSES IMMEDIATE CONCERNS OF STUDENTS

Responsive services consists of activities that meet the immediate needs and concerns of students whether these needs or concerns require counseling, consultation, referral, or information. This component is available to all students and is often student initiated. While counselors have special training and skills to respond to these needs and concerns, the cooperation and support of the entire faculty and staff are necessary for successful implementation of this component.

Responsive services are delivered through:
-Consultation
-Personal & Crisis Counseling
-Referrals

INDIVIDUAL PLANNING ASSISTS STUDENTS IN PLANNING, MONITORING AND MANAGING THEIR PERSONAL AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Individual planning consists of activities that help students plan. monitor, and manage their own learning as well as their personal and career development. Within this component, students evaluate their educational, occupational, and personal goals. The activities in this component are counselor planned and directed. These activities are generally delivered on an individual basis or by working with individuals in small groups.

Individual planning is implemented through:
-Individual appraisal
-Individual advisement
-Individual placement

SYSTEM SUPPORT INCLUDES PROGRAM, STAFF AND SCHOOL SUPPORTED ACTIVITIES AND SERVICES

System support consists of management activities that establish, maintain and enhance the total guidance program.

This component is implemented and carried out through activities in the following areas:
-Professional development
-Staff and community relations
-Consultation with teachers
-Advisory councils
-Community outreach
-Program monitoring and assessment
-Academic testing

COUNSELING DEFINITION

Guidance and counseling is an integral part of each school's total educational program. It is developmental by design and includes sequential activities organized and implemented by certified school counselors with the support of teachers, administrators, students and parents. The counseling staff, in partnership with parents. The counseling staff, in partnership with the community-at-large, seeks to provide a program of assistance that addresses the my raid issues that impact our students. Our curriculum incorporates many of the components of a student assistance program. In addition, we acknowledge that the unique makeup of our school community enables us to respond to these issues utilizing a diverse, community-based network of resources.

The guidance and counseling program is designed to address the needs of all students by helping them acquire competencies in knowledge of self and others, educational and vocational development and career planning. The program incorporates and supports the philosophies of the Michigan Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program, as well as the national standards for school counseling programs developed by the American School Counselors Association.
