What is community service?
Community service is service without pay to a non-profit organization or an individual or group in need of assistance. The service must be primarily for the benefit of others, not the individual rendering the service.

What is required?
Students have the option of completing a required 40 hours of service before graduation or completing an additional 100 hours of service for a half-credit. More detailed requirements can be found on the Requirements Page.

Where is Mrs. Gibbs and how can I reach her?
Mrs. Gibbs' time is divided between two schools. She is at Andover (645-4638) on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Friday afternoons and at Lahser (339-3232) on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday mornings. You can also reach her via email at egibbs@bloomfield.org

When does paperwork need to be turned in?
The Community Service Agreement, also referred to as the contract, needs to be turned in before a student starts his or her service so that a placement may be approved. It needs the signatures of the student, a parent, and the agency supervisor. All other paperwork can be turned in upon completion.

When does my community service need to be completed?
The required forty hours of service MUST be completed and your paperwork MUST be turned in by MAY 1st of your senior year.

How many 1/2 credits can I earn for community service?
Students can earn up to 3 full credits for community service, corresponding to 600 hours. Successive placements for credit beyond the initial 1/2 credit must be with a different placement or must be an upgraded experience.

How do I find a placement?
Students are welcome to visit the community service office and look through the file drawer marked, "Placements" to find sites that would be appealing to them. Current opportunities are always posted on Mrs. Gibbs' door. Students are also always welcome to find placements on their own, as long as they have them approved by Mrs. Gibbs prior to starting.

If I volunteer at more than one place, do I have to write more than one essay and attend more than one meeting?
No, you are not expected to do your community service in just one place so you don't have to do more than one essay. Just one essay and meeting are needed for graduation.

Where is Mrs. Gibbs' office?
At Lahser, Mrs. Gibbs' office is located in the Counseling Office. At Andover her office is located in the same hallway as the Attendance Office, across from the Media Center.

Can I get credit for doing service over the summer?
Students are more than welcome to complete their community service over the summer. It is important to note, however, that if a student will be doing over 100 hours and wishes to receive a half-credit he or she needs to register through Summer School.
